Mr. George Stephen  Mauney  Sr. , age 97 of Cleveland. Mr. Mauney passed away June 27, 2012.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 pm, Sunday, July 1, 2012 from the funeral home chapel with Rev. Doug Merck officiating. Interment will follow in the Historic Cleveland Cemetery with the White County Color Guard providing military honors Mr. Mauney was born on October 18, 1914 in Gordon County, Georgia to the late Allen Luther Mauney Sr. and Frances Erwin Mauney. He graduated from Georgia Tech with a degree in Electrical Engineering and was employed for some thirty five plus years with the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). Shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor, George entered the United States Navy where he served until 1946, afterwards he remained in the Naval Reserves where he retired as a Commander. In 1940, George married his longtime sweetheart, Carrie Mae Head of Cleveland. Following retirement, George and Mae returned to Cleveland where they were active members on Mt. Yonah Baptist Church. Education was an important part of George’s life, knowing, he created the “Mae Mauney Scholarship’ which was given to deserving students and both Truett McConnell College and Georgia Tech.  George was an emeritus member of wht White County Historical Society, the American Legion and the Georgia Tech Alumni Association
In addition to his parents, George is preceded in death by his wife, Carrie Mae Head Mauney, daughter in  law, Cathey Mauney, sisters, Maudelle Mauney, Sarah Cooley, Chlorene Phillips and brothers, Paul Mauney, Jack Mauney, Thomas Mauney and Allen Mauney Jr.
Survivors include his son, Stephen Mauney of Knoxville, Tennessee as well as a host of  additional relatives
Flowers will be acknowledged or memorial donations may be made to Mt. Yonah Baptist Church or the White County Historical Society for the perseveration of the Historic Cleveland Cemetery
Visitation will be held on Saturday from 2 to 4 pm and 6 to 8 pm
